Chapter 225: Mission Uganda

Just west of the Rwenzori Mountains and south of Lake Albert in the Bundibugyo District, lies a small town called Nyahuka.  This town is on the border of Uganda and Congo where the unreached people groups of the Babwisi, Bakanjo and Pigmy tribes live.  The land is beautiful and lush.  The people are handsome and caring.  The culture is intriguing.  Their needs are great World Harvest Mission began working in this area 20 years ago.  Through their efforts, the people have a written language, some of the Holy Scriptures in their own tongue, clean water, and a new Maternal Child Hospital Ward.  We can both learn from them and help them.  The efforts of the missionaries have built a strong foundation.  They have asked that we partner with them and this community to continue what God is doing.

Currently their are 2 families and 5 singles on the team in Bundibugyo. We are 1 of 2 families currently raising support to join the team in June 2013. While our arm of the ministry will be more focused in the area of clinical medicine, health promotion and nutritional education, the other family is coming on to assist with pastoral training and discipleship support. Both our family and theirs look forward to joining hands in ministry with the team so that the Gospel can go forth in word and deed.

Current ongoing projects include:

 Christ School Bundibugyo
a secondary school where over 300 Ugandan children are learning how to be cultural leaders with a heart for true redemption (more info at www.whm.org/csb)

 Pastoral Discipleship
New Life Church is the WHM church plant that has a heart to reach out to the surrounding areas with the Gospel and translate the Scripture into their languages.

 Maternal/Child Healthcare
WHM physicians work alongside a Ugandan physician at the Nyahuka Health Center, primarily in the inpatient pediatric ward where many children would otherwise die from poor maternal health, malaria, malnutrition, diarrhea, or pneumonia.

Nutrition Outreach
Through goat farming and demonstration gardens, the team is working to collaborate with Christ School Farms (a part of Christ School Bundibugyo) to promote nutritional education and healthy nutritional practices within the community

 Water Purification
One of the keys to improving health is improving the environment. Over the past 15 years, WHM has been working to provide a clean water system to the area that has suffered much from water-borne illnesses such as cholera.

To get a glimpse of what WHM has been doing in Bundibugyo in recent years, check out this video made in 2010 by the Myrhe's, who served in Bundibugyo and are now WHM field directors in Kenya!
