how to turn human waste into a useful fuel source. Ok, at first it sounds a little gross, but when you learn how resourceful (as well as clean and efficient) the method actually is, it begins to make perfect sense.
"Use what you have, to create what you need..."
That is the motto. Here is a little demonstration on how it works:
Christ School Bundibugyo is doing just that!
Here is an excerpt from our team member Michael Stevens, who is helping spear-head this vital project at the school:
As the academic year is winding down, we are shifting our gears to the physical needs of the school. Entering our two month break at the beginning of December, lower traffic on campus will allow us to make some improvements to CSB's physical plant. We have been blessed to learn about a Ugandan company called "Green Heat Ltd." Taken from their website, "Green Heat is a know-how provider of high quality proven biogas technology for anaerobic digestion of animal manure and organic agricultural wastes in both fixed-dome and above-ground digesters."
Many of you might remember the latrine issues that we had earlier this year. [The latrines began caving in because of the massive amounts of rain] Installing a biogas system from Green Heat will provide us with six new latrines that will always be empty! These latrines will feed into a biodigester that will convert the waste to methane which will be used for cooking gas in the CSB kitchen. This will cut down our costs on latrine maintenance as well as firewood for the kitchen.
By God's grace, we were awarded a Swiss grant that will cover roughly 80% of the costs of this project! However, we are still in need of $1500 to make sure this project is completed. We have stepped out in faith by moving forward with the installation of the system on campus, praying that some of you will continue to partner with us in this way. We are excited about having such a technology at CSB, and the first of its kind in the whole district. We believe that it will enable the school to become more self-sufficient in sustainable cooking while having a minimal effect on the environment.
Many of you have already helped this year to make CSB more self-sufficient in sustainable water collection by your generous donations to the rainwater harvesting project. We are happy to say that the project is complete and the school has begun using rainwater for their many "hydro-needs."
